NItro Compound Formation (Matt Lieberman)
The sulfuric acid protonates the hydroxyl group on the nitric acid, which leaves as water. The remaining molecule is an unstable positively charged nitrogen double-bonded to two oxygens. One of the carbon atoms in the benzene ring attacks this compound at the nitrogen, giving both oxygens partial-negative charges and making the overall charge of the nitro group more stable. However, this leaves a positive charge in the pi system of the benzene ring which is compensated for by loss of a proton at the ipso carbon.
