Formation of a Nitrile from a Primary Amide Using Thionyl Chloride (Amelia Zoernig)

Azo Compound Formation Via Aromatic Substitution (Matt Lieberman)

In this reaction, benzamine's amine is converted into a diazonium ion after an O=N+ radical adds a nitrogen and removes the hydrogens from the original nitrogen, releasing water in the process and creating a cation. Then, another benzene molecule with an activating, para, ortho directing group such as this methyl group attacks the positively charged diazonium compound and forms a bond with the positive, outermost nitrogen. A proton is lost to reform the conjugation of the attacking benzene ring. This reaction will mainly happen at the para position because of steric hindrance.

Synthesis of a nitrile from cyanide and halogenalkane (Tyria Heath)

Addition of a Nucleophilic Nitrile to an Alkene (Amelia Zoernig)

Synthesis of Benzonitrile from Aniline (Chloe Wu)
